Arnold Palmer, l'uomo che rese popolare il golf portandolo per primo dai country club alla televisione, icona e leggenda di tutti gli appassionati di questo sport, è morto a Pittsburgh a 87 anni, per problemi di cuore. Lo ha fatto sapere Alastair Johnson, Ceo della Arnold Palmer enterprises, la società che aveva fondato per gestire a favore dello sport e dell'impegno filantropico il suo enorme patrimonio, pari a 675 milioni di dollari.
Ha vinto moltissimi tornei e competizioni sia nel PGA Tour che nel Champions Tour a partire dal 1955. Soprannominato "The King" non solo per i suoi primati sportivi ma anche per la sua eleganza e umanità, del golf è stato anche un innovatore. Tra i primi a piangerne la scomparsa, Tiger Woods: "Grazie Arnold per la tua amicizia, i consigli e un sacco di risate", ha twittato. "La tua filantropia e umiltà - ha aggiunto - sono parte della tua leggenda. Sarà difficile immaginare il golf senza di te".
